Oceanaire Seafood Room
"Downhill"
July 19, 2007 - We used to really like Oceanaire - great sides, lots of choice etc.  We went there last month with family in town and were completely underwhelmed.  Maybe we used to have more money, but the prices were outrageous, and the food was moderate at best.  The fries were soggy, the fish was overcooked, the paella lacked flavour.  There are so many great seafood places in Seattle, it's just not worth the price/performance risk...

Dahlia Lounge
"Best Burger In Town"
June 12, 2007 - It's funny - as a Seattle resident sometimes you feel like Tom Douglas is everywhere, and in some ways he is.  And while this may be offputting to some, if you can get past it, he truly has some amazing offerings.  Serious Pie is seriously good, the atmosphere at Palace Kitchen is worth going for alone, the mojitos at Lola are some of the best in town, and, as the title says, the burger at Dahlia is out of this world.  It may be the best burger I've ever had.
While the micro-franchise thing might seem offputting, there are enough highlights at each restaurant, and they are all different enough that it's worth the visit, particularly if you haven't been in a while.

Lark
"Overrated, Underfooded"
May 30, 2007 - Before I get a lot of haters for this comment, let me first say the food at Lark is actually quite good.  My issue is with the quantity to price ratio.  I expect a restaurant like this to be expensive.  However, the portions are so small, it just doesn't work.  They encourage you to order multiple items and share, but we've been there with 4 people, and you don't just have to order multiple items, you have to order multiple multiple items.  The cheese plate for instance is barely enough for 1, we had to order 2.  Similarlly with just about everything else.  They don't give you a good sense for how much to order, so we'd order one round, realize it wasn't enough, and then order more, but by then people were kind of tired of eating, noone got enough of what they wanted etc.
So while it is good food, there are lots of other choices in this class - Union, Lampreia, Campagne, Madison Park Cafe to name a few - that offer better value with as good, if not better food.

Via Tribunali
"Hit And Miss"
May 30, 2007 - This place goes both ways - you definitely get caught up in it - great atmosphere, love the stone work, great service, fresh ingredients.  But at the end of the day it's about the pizza.  Sometimes it is amazing, but with their brick oven it seems like it is all to easy to either undercook it or overcook it, and depending on the night, you just don't know.  In fact, I've had nights where the middle was soggy and the outside was burnt.  I can't tell you not to go there, it has some of the best flavours in Seattle, but be warned...

Ristorante Machiavelli
"Worth the Wait"
May 30, 2007 - Same thing everyone says - great food, reasonable price, good basic Italian selection - but the wait can be a killer.  But hey, go with the right frame of mind, enjoy a glass of wine and chill.  It's worth it.
