Veselka (in New York) "perogies = the food of the gods" January 05, 2007 - When I nearly sliced off my whole ring finger in 1997 the first thing I did (after the stitches that is) was send my friend to get me a to-go order of Veselka perogies and a side of kielbasa. Although the place has seen some renovations, even over the time I've been visiting, the comforty comfort foods have stayed deliciously, wonderously the same. |

Magnolia Bakery (in New York) "slap some butter on that cupcake" January 05, 2007 - You who actually still reside in NY don't need to be told how lucky you are. As a former New Yorker (now in Seattle) I rave like a crazy person to any fleece wearing person who will hear that these are the best cupcakes anywhere. I used the recipe from their cookbook for the cupcakes for my wedding. You can make 'em at home, but you just can't bring yourself to put as much icing on one cupcake as they do! |

Xunta (in New York) "Celebrate, good times, come on!" January 05, 2007 - It's hard to explain the allure of Xunta, but I love this place. Like the Indian joints on Curry Row, it's not "nice" but oh so festive. There's a certain cheese factor in the decor that I find strangely soothing - the seaworthy nets and the giant barrels as tables. It's dark and cavernous and it feels like you could stay there all night sipping plastic pitchers of delicious sangria, ordering more and more dates wrapped with bacon, and then more dates wrapped with bacon and then eating a couple of dates wrapped in bacon until everyone is drunk and laughing. |

Lupa (in New York) "Testa" January 05, 2007 - The first time I went to Lupa, we ordered the Affetati Piccolo, an assortment of house-cured meats. There was one plate, the Testa, a sort of meaty paste on a plate. My companion asked our jovial waiter what was in it - he replied "I'll tell you when she's had some," pointing to me. I had some and (it was good) and was quickly told (with some relish) that they made it by taking a whole pig's head, boiling it on the stove for a day, scooping out the inside and adding some nutmeg. That's Lupa in a nutshell - a place that can even make THAT taste amazing.Their ricotta gnocchi are light and yummy, their carbonara exquisitely nutty and the sunchoke appetizer is a fresh tasting surprise. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Union Square Grill "Happy Hour" December 13, 2006 - The happy hour here is a favorite pre-show destination for us when going to see a play at ACT or the 5th Avenue. Although the scrumtious truffle fries are gone from the menu, we were recently told by one of the waitstaff that he could still get a batch whipped up for us. They are worth asking for - but the sweet potato fry substitution, with their delicious, if mysterious, condiment accompaniment, are also a fry to behold. |
