La Isla
"La Isla Bonita"
June 13, 2008 - Being a NY Puerto Rican now living in Seattle finding La Isla restaurant has been a pleasant trip back through memory lane. From the moment I stepped into "Sofrito" which is what it first was named, I knew I was in for a rare treat in the Pacific Northwest. I must admit, I agreed to accompany a friend with trepidation. My feeling was "what do pacific northwest folk know about the traditions of cooking Caribbean food?"
Well before sampling my nostrils were pleasantly embraced by that wonderful familiar aroma from my grandmother's kitchen and my aunts in Puerto Rico. Still skeptical I placed my order for some empanadas and bistec encebollado (skirt steak w/ sauteed onions). First I was surprised to hear that that owners were also Puerto Rican and from the Bronx (very good sign) and then surprised again when the meal arrived.
It was delicious and if I closed my eyes I was brought back to being a young boy waiting with my brothers and sisters and cousins ever so patiently to have some of that delicious food. Listening to the beautiful, strong, loving, gentle women gossip, laugh and pour their hearts and souls into the food for their family.
The food and service here is as beautiful as La Isla of Puerto Rico. Go experience some of best of the Caribbean without having to go too far from home. It'll be a trip worth taking.

Crave
"Seattle Wonder"
June 13, 2008 - If you haven't been to Crave then you're missing out on one of the wonders of Seattle. Whether sitting at one of the tables looking out from the windows as the mosaic of people that make up the streets of Seattle pass by, or gazing at the artisans creating the mouth watering dishes as you sit at the bar, eyes glued to the masters at work,  the experience is awesome. Yes, a little small and sometimes cramped, but just breathe in the aroma of the scrumptious delicacies being created and you know you're in great hands.
Each dish is meticulously prepared for each individual patron with such care and love you'd think you're royalty. Complementing the generous attack on your palate is the friendly, attentive service you receive from the servers. Given the hassles they must endure by having to turn away hungry Satellites fiending their Crave culinary fix it's a wonder they are still a joy to have as part of your Crave experience.
If you're not Crave'ing your dose of this great addition to the Seattle culinary scene, you haven't experienced its greatness. So walk, run, waddle, peddle, board, shimmy, shake, roll...however you decide to get there just do so and let your senses be pampered.
