Bavarian Meat Delicatessen
"Smoked Roast Beef"
January 23, 2008 - I've never ordered a sandwich there, but take home meats in bulk.
Buy 1/4 lb. smoked roast beef sliced thin. Take home, put on rye bread, add mustard and enjoy.
The brats, the dogs, other sausages and deli meats are delicious, too.

Specialty's Cafe & Bakery
"It all looks better than it tastes . . ."
January 22, 2008 - Continually disappointed. Everything looks wonderful, but the first bite almost inevitably is a let down.
Of the bakery goods, only the cookies actually taste as good as they appear to be. Most other items are just too dry, too heavy and/or too sickeningly sweet.
A holiday special pumpkin cinnamon roll was horrible; it had an overly sweet slightly medicinal taste (ordered it at two different locations and it was equally terrible - tossed after the first bite).
Veggie sandwiches from several locations have had limp, less than fresh filling although the sandwiches looked fabulous.
Specialty's needs to follow-up on the eye appeal with some taste appeal. I'm tired of being disappointed and have taken a hiatus from its food.

Roxy's Diner
"Defunct"
January 04, 2008 - It's gone.
Roxy's Diner is in Fremont. Don't call the phone number above because you'll just pester someone working in a downtown office who's getting the calls.

Family Doughnut Shop
"Donut Heaven"
January 03, 2008 - Need I say more.
Don't let the size and location of this small shop in a Seven-Eleven mini-strip mall just west of I-5 put you off.
The donuts are divine. Old fashioned buttermilk donuts are made the way they should be.

Sazerac
"A New Favorite"
January 02, 2008 - This was my first visit. I went for lunch just before Christmas. It was packed with office parties and shoppers, and I was just a single lunch. Nevertheless, I was seated almost immediately and my order was promptly taken . Throughout lunch, I received the kind of service one gets if a tip in the high double digits is expected. It was really first class.
I had the catfish, which was perfectly breaded and fried, spiced with just a hint of heat to remind you this is New Orleans style food. It was moist and tender and was served on a bed of lemon mashed potatoes. What a tasty and welcome change from the usually not very good garlic mashed potatoes served by so many restaurants.
I will definitely be returning.
