Alicia's Market (in Honolulu)
"Poke Poke"
June 03, 2008 - On a tip from a frequent visitor to Honolulu who we ran in to at Diamond Head farmer's market (also full of excellent food), we drove over to the other side of town in search of poke.
And poke we found in abundance -- a glass case stretching the entire back wall containing tako (octopus) and the more common ahi in several preparations, lomi salmon, shrimp, piles of snail-like shellfish, etc.  We stared for a good 15 minutes before deciding on three one-pound containers to take back.  The convenience store ambiance was not the best (no seating here, this is a takeout place).  Plenty of other kinds of freshly cooked snack and lunch food too, like roast pork, spam musubi, teriyaki, rice, poi...
As we left I'm sure we were obviously visitors from a colder place -- in addition to our poke we were weighed down with a large bottle of cold water, a coke, and shave ice.

Quinn's
"Open for Lunch!"
March 18, 2008 - Quinn's just opened for lunch, so we have a deadly triangle of Quinn's, Presse, and Boom Noodle for our yummy $15 lunch needs.
I've only been there twice, and have had excellent food both times, but the single reason that I like Quinn's is that they have roasted cauliflower.  Which is only the best vegetable in the entire world that until now I've only had at home and never at a restaurant.

Ningtu (in Vancouver)
"Great Chinese Brunch"
March 04, 2008 - I went there for brunch with my Dad and my Vancouver relatives.  We had some soy milk (they have both salty and sweet), some sao bing yu tiao (two kinds of fried bread-link things), smoked fish and duck cold dishes, and xiao long bao (soup dumplings).

"Rooster!"
February 26, 2008 - I had already eaten dinner so I was looking for something small.  The cured tongue was great, and the large ceramic rooster looking over my shoulder added just the right surreal touch.

Julia's Indonesian Kitchen
"lucky find"
October 05, 2007 - I was planning to go to Alebrije, but it was closed, so I went across the street to Julia's,  It's in an old house, which is always a plus, and so is a cuisine that's new to me.  I sampled the mini rijstaefel (sp?), which is basically a scoop of rice with 3 smallish portions of various dishes.  It's only $8 and more than enough food for me.  Rijsaefels are also available in larger individual sizes and a family size for 4 people.  That sounds like it'll be fun to try...
