Mayuri Indian Cuisine
"3 in 1"
February 12, 2008 - First of all, Mayuri is a mini-empire. The place referenced on this page is the sit-down restaurant. I had the buffet lunch, and it was quite good. Better variety of dishes than you find at most North Indian-centric buffets, and the spinach rice and aloo palak were both very flavorful. Plus they have coconut chutney, which I live for.
Over on 152nd St., quite nearby, they have two more locations. A grocery store that has an excellent selection of Indian staples, and so-so produce. And a bakery/chaat/video location that is pretty bad. Well, I'm sure the videos are fine but the chaat was lame. I had pani puri (aka golgoppa), which is one of the yardstick items of chaat, and it was ok but lifeless. And paneer pakora, which was coated much too thickly, producing a hard, tasteless pakora. Not as good as Wisconsin cheese curds! I also had a besan ladoo where the sugar had crystallized, so instead of the slightly grainy texture of the besan, it was like eating coarse sand. Not good.

Tamarind Tree
"Re: health inspections"
November 19, 2007 - I'm not at all going to defend bad health inspections, but looking at the King County records for Tamarind Tree doesn't reveal anything out of the ordinary for many places. Here's the link where you can look up all King County inspections. http://www.decadeonline.com/main.phtml?agency=skc . Tamarind Tree has had some serious violations, and some inspections with 0 penalty points. The same is true of Canlis or just about any other place you check. So I wouldn't get too up in arms.
