Boom Noodle
"Edible, but lacking diligence"
March 29, 2008 - It wasn't awful; in fact, if someone suggested it, I'd go here again, at least on occasion.
The edamame puree thing was interesting, though not particularly Japanese. The mushroom soba I had was made with an incredibly overly sesame-oiled broth. I've never seen a soba preparation that involved sesame oil in Japan. The "clever" touch of the parmesan crisp worked for me, but the slightly overcooked noodles and lukewarm broth didn't.
Most everyone in our group who tried the ramen, many of them Japanese, liked the noodles, but generally felt the broth wasn't well executed.
One of my friends said Boom has perfectly recreated the experience of the $4.50 bowl of ramen and $1.50 gyoza which is what you'd pay at a low-end slurp-and-go chain, for a mere $17. It's one thing to pay 2 or 3 times what I'd typically pay in Tokyo, once tax and tip are considered, but entirely another to do so when the quality is so uneven.
I'm giving this a gentle thumbs down. With some more attention to detail, this could be a very interesting place. I'm willing to entertain some departure from convention, but overcooked noodles and lukewarm soup would be absolute dealbreakers in Japan.

Pam's Kitchen
"Improvements"
May 19, 2007 - I popped in about 4-5 weeks ago and was acknowledged, seated, and served rather quickly. Assuming that holds up, they will be a decent place to get a quick, simple, tasty, reasonably healthy, inexpensive meal.

Moonlight Cafe
"Not aging so gracefully, but nice enough"
February 06, 2007 - The interior could stand some work, especially now that similarly-priced options like the comparatively elegant Tamarind Tree are only a stone's throw away, but this was one of the first decent Vietnamese restaurants I learned about in Seattle. I actually feel happiest with the vegetarian dishes that don't try so hard to be meatlike, but the restaurant has a number of respectable entrees.
Unfortunately, even when I'm accompanied by (non-Vietnamese) Asian friends, the wait-staff has a tendency to steer people to dishes they think Americans will like, so I tend to fare following my own sense of balance.

Pam's Kitchen
"I'd like to like this place, but..."
February 06, 2007 - The food is simple and pleasant, but the service is amateurish. I've been only twice so far, both times finding myself placed far lower in priority than a large table.
That would be almost understandable, but on my second attempt to eat here, my presence was never acknowledged. I chose to sit down. About 5 minutes later, another couple came in and was also ignored. Another 5 minutes later, two friends of the waiter dropped in and the waiter spent two or three minutes chatting with them before going on to take care of the large party again. Finally, he noticed the couple that came in after I did, and he started taking their order. I walked out, having tired of waiting.
I guess such mishaps are to be expected in the University District... But I don't have the patience for that anymore.
