Nathalie's Fish House (in Decatur) "Apalachicola Oysters!" July 24, 2008 - Stopped in for lunch today and was pleasantly surprised. Always skeptical about oysters in Atlanta, found out they get 'em up from Apalachicola a couple times a week, so we started of with some very fresh and tasty oysters that were not "just off the boat" but were as close as you can get way up here. Followed this with the mahi-mahi fish tacos with huge chunks of very lightly breaded fish and fresh avocados and medium-hot salsa on corn tortillas. These came with a side of plantains that added a great sweet flavor to the spice of the tacos. Service is efficent, but not necessarily speedy. Atmosphere is very casual and would be great for after work or just sitting around having beer and oysters. This place is probably now on our lunch rotation. |

Dusty's Barbecue (in Atlanta) "Carolina BBQ" July 23, 2008 - Dusty's is almost kinda sorta like S. Carolina Que... or as close as you're gonna get in Atlanta. Stopped in for lunch today, had a regular pulled pork platter w/ hushpuppies, Brunswick stew, and green beans. With iced tea, still under 10 bucks. The pulled pork is good but possibly a little dry. The addition of the "hot" vinegar based sauce brings it around just fine. The brunswick stew is fair-to-middlen... no real spice level (too bad) and not too sweet (thank goodness). This place has been here forever and is worth a stop once in a while. It made it onto a recent PBS "Atlanta BBQ" show mostly because it's one of the half dozen intown bbq spot that HAVE been going strong for years and years. |

Quoc Huong (in Doraville) "Bahn Mi !!!" July 22, 2008 - Got a tip that the best bahn mi in town could be found at Quoc Huong. That was news to me... of course, not having a bahn mi before, didn't know if it was a good thing to know or not.Turns out, they are tasty little (actually, not so little) vegetable and meat stuffed baguettes (and we're talking explosively crispy/crusty bread here...it is really a BIG part of the sammy). I got one bbq pork and one chicken. Each had pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, onions, jalapenos, basil, with a splash of soy sauce and maybe something else... and were very very tasty...and at 2 bucks each were a bargain. Please note that I couldn't finish both of these... I got 2 because I wanted to try a couple, but a single sandwich is good enough for a lunch... and is only 2 bucks.Be forewarned, this place is a bit of a dive and language can be a challenge, but it is WELL worth it. |

Yoforia - Perimeter Mall (in Atlanta) "Frozen Yogurt!" July 21, 2008 - Atlanta is an odd place... hot as could be during the summer, but it doesn't seem like ice cream / galato / frozen yogurt places can make it, except for the big chains (eeck). Luckily, looks like Yoforia and a couple other Korean-based "healthy" frozen yogurt places are making a go of it. There are 3 of these Yoforia around town, with the one in the Highlands getting the most attention. They all have the same basic menu, 4 types of frozen yogurt (plain, green tea, pomegranate, and dark chocolate) and things to put on top. While I could have gone with one of the zen-sounding flavors topped with fruit and seeds... I instead went with the dark chocolate with coconut and almonds (look at my icon folks... what did ya expect?) This is more of an "icy" frozen yogurt and less "creamy", but was very tasty. I actually think on a hot day this is a little more refreshing than a really high fat content creamy ice cream that just makes you thirsty. On the price scale, probably closer to the high end for yogurt, but something that I thought was worth it. |

Goldberg's Bagel Company & Deli (in Atlanta) "Dependable Breakfast" July 21, 2008 - Grabbed breakfast here this morning... just wish I could make it here more often. Nice neighborhood feel to the place. Had the usual, eggs and corned beef hash, a bagel and fruit. The fruit is inevitably "blah", but everything else is always good with the hash being very good (not sure if they make it themselves, but it sure doesn't seem like something out of a can, much sharper corned beef flavor) and the bagels are always very fresh. Coffee is always good and they never let it get down any lower than half full. Good bunch of folks working here.Weekends can be crazy unless you go early, but weekdays are always pretty relaxed. |
