Joël Robuchon (MGM Grand) (in Las Vegas)
"Excellent, but..."
March 28, 2008 - I'd heard great things about Robuchon, all the way up to "Best meal I've ever had." And when I hear that from someone I respect, I have to give it a try, even when they require you to commit with a credit card to a 6 or 16 course meal when making the reservation (priced at $250 and $385 respectively).
When we first arrived, we started with a cocktail in the lounge, and I have to say that they make a great Martini (I even ran out afterwards and bought the Right Gin that they used). Then we were seated and started our 6 courses (plus the giant bread cart, desert cart and bonus desert course). The courses ranged from weird to delicious, my favorite being a creamy soup with duck confit and truffle oil. The service was in general great, though we felt like they were vulturing over us when they gave us the check (maybe we were the last table and they wanted to go home).
The wine list was a bit of a novelty, with the average bottles in the $500+ range. There were a couple of bottles that I'd seen at other very nice restaurants for half the price they were charging at Robuchon.
Overall I really liked it, but it suffered from high expectations and slightly poor delivery on the price-performance scale.

Sitka & Spruce
"No longer open for lunch"
August 14, 2007 - After finally making it to Sitka and Spruce for lunch a few weeks ago, I just discovered that they are no longer open for lunch. They were my new top choice for lunch near my office in Eastlake. Oh well...

O'Donnell's Sea Grill (in Gaithersburg)
"Name sake"
May 22, 2007 - Maybe it's just because I'm an O'Donnell, but I've always had a fondness for this place

Chez Panisse (in Berkeley)
"Worthy of the legend"
March 06, 2007 - I love Chez, though the cost restricts it to special occasions (for me at least). My favorite memory there is when I ordered the "White peach" for dessert (for $8), and was served a single whole peach on a plate with just a knife. While kind of ridiculous, the peach was really quite good.

Picante (in Berkeley)
"Home sick"
March 06, 2007 - I grew up in Berkeley but moved to Seattle 12 years ago. In my many trips home since, I always stop by picante for a super grilled chicken burrito. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Their margaritas are pretty tasty too.
