Epic Roasthouse (in San Francisco)
"High Priced Mediocrity"
June 07, 2008 - For a place with much hype and high charges, it really failed to deliver on many fronts.  It was a packed Thursday night and we arrived to a noisy venue around 8:15pm for our reservation and was seated promptly.  The server was amazing, YET her back up staff flawed and it affected her quality.  When each of us ordered very specific dry aged beef and the filet mignon cuts, they delivered each steak to the wrong person yet we had to discover the difference.  For a place you are paying $40 for an 8oz, I would hope they would get that correct as it let down right at the climax.  The meat was mediocre at best.  The dry aged filet was actually a little tough, which should NEVER happen especially when paying such freight.  However, the first dish, a hamachi ceviche starter was well prepared with cherries and radish sprouts, yet it came out un-chilled and slightly warm (maybe put on a warm plate) and it changed the flavor of the dish (not good). The wine list was good and sommelier solid with her recommendations.  The ambient noise dominated the conversation so much that I found my throat horse post evening from trying to engage in a conversation with my guest.  With the mix-ups caused by our servers, the gave us a baked chocolate soufflĂ© that had great presentation yet was dry and a bit simple in flavor (except for the caramel sea salt ice cream on top).   On my departure, visiting the lavatory, it was in disarray, no toilet paper and reminiscent of a roadside gas station.  I would not plan to return as there are such better-executed food venues in this fine town.
