Chile Pepper "Authentic, Traditional, Family" June 20, 2008 - My wife and I stopped in on a hot Friday night in June, and were warmly welcomed into Chile Pepper by a woman who clearly was the 'mom' in a 'mom and pop' owned restaurant. The menu includes burritos, tacos, that you've had before, but my wife and I went for the specialties of the house and weren't disappointed. The food was flavorful with heat on the dishes where you'd expect, and sometimes when you wouldn't.'Pop' served us dinner, and while a bit softspoken, was quick to recommend his favorites on the menu.On the whole, Chile Pepper was like a short visit to Mexico. The food was wonderful, the service... well, a bit leisurely in the best Mexican way. If you want beck and call service, try El Azteca. I'll be at Chile Pepper. |

India Bistro "Fine food, great service" May 21, 2008 - I went to the Ravenna branch of India Bistro last night with my wife and another couple. We started with a mixed plate appetizer which was delicious and satisfying. For our entrees, we ordered the chicken tikka, fish tikka [more on this later], lamb vindaloo, and sag paneer. We ordered everything with three stars. The entrees were served in an ingenious hotplate so that everything remained hot throughout the meail. The chicken and lamb were excellent, and the spinach dish was outstanding. One comment - I ordered the fish tikka as the menu referenced it was salmon. When it arrived, it wasn't salmon, it was cod. I mentioned this to the waiter who explained that the salmon didn't stay on the skewer very well. He apologized for the error in the menu and assured me that the cod with the sauce would be better, but offered to bring me some salmon anyway. I took him up on his offer, and he was right - the cod was wonderful in the sauce and I was very pleased with the service. The Ravenna location has a surprisingly cozy atmosphere for the space and the neighborhood. If you like Indian food, you won't be disappointed. |

Divino "Tune down the atmosphere..." May 11, 2008 - My wife and I stopped into Divino this past weekend, hoping to catch a guitarist who plays there on Friday and Saturday nights. The staff was great - friendly without be obtrusive, especially since my wife and I were there for a glass of wine and a snack. The wine by the glass menu was solid, if a bit uninspired. I had a Nero D'Avala and my wife had a Verdiccichio. We had a couple of light bites - a misto of sea food and vegetables fried in the Ligurian style and a salad of fresh greens and mozarella. Both were solid, with the misto really good. My wife disagreed - she liked the salad, but not so much the misto.Okay, here's where I have to dish a bit. There weren't any tables, so first we sat at a bar table. The table top was an illuminated red orb and was really unsteady. We switched to the bar, which was better. However, the bar stools were unusually uncomfortable for a six foot man and a five foot eight woman. The tables also featured the incredibly uncomfortable chairs that Crush has. [my wife and I are not overweight people.]I like atmosphere and Divino oozes it. But... it tries so hard to have so much atmosphere that it becomes a club - and less of a dining experience. Divinio needs to decided if it's a restaurant, wine bar, or club and then be that. |

Rialto Pasta Bar & Grill "Rudy's Rocks" April 02, 2008 - The Rialto is practically a neighborhood institution in Green Lake. The menu consists of a few appetizers and a series of traditional pasta dishes. As someone who group in the Italian-American towns in New Jersey, the simple plats at Rialto deliver. The true test of any Italian restaurant is the gravy (that's sauce to us mortals), and Rialto delivers with "Rudy's Red", a work of art in red. Rialto usually features three specials a night on the blackboard, and while I typically stick to Rudy's Red, I've had the specials a half dozen times and have never been disappointed.Rialto recently announced a move, as its building is being demolished to make way for (what else) condos. The restaurant will find a temporary home in the old Fremont Classic location, but the owner and staff report that Rialto will return to its old location once the condos are complete. |

Elemental "Breaking Up with Elemental" October 29, 2007 - Oh, Elemental, how you charmed me when we first met. You were coy, and not willing to come out and wait on me when there were no tables. When a table opened up, you quit playing hard to get, and we sat down. The meal was divine, with a cocktail and selection of wines that I'd not heard of, but enjoyed immensely. Elemental flirted with us shamefully... I mean, really, who else can pick out a fine white wine from Slovenia? The flirtation was consummated with dessert and coffee, and a check that explicitly said, "no tipping is required." I gushed about Elemental to my friends with children, safe in the knowledge that they would never go there. I felt smug among my childless friends who hadn't gotten in, because I counted Elemental among my favorite dining experiences.Alas, on my last four visits to Elemental, she's turned her cold shoulder to me. "Come back in two hours"... "we won't serve you, but you can wait if you want"... and "you're probably not going to get served tonight..." After a fine, flirtatious meal, months of this cold shoulder have turned me off. Elemental, I hereby break up with you. No longer will I sing your praises to friends. No, now I will say that Element is just plain too difficult to be worth it.It's not you, really. It's me. 6 people like this review - Recommend |
