McMenamins (Queen Anne)
"Friendly and consistent"
April 12, 2008 - I hesitate to eat at, let alone recommend, any chain restaurants, but McMenamins is an exception. I like all of the local McMenamins (and would love to try out their hotels some day). The service at the Queen Anne McMenamins is always friendly. The beer is good. The food is a known quantity: homey, tasty, reasonably priced.

Crow
"Good but pricey"
March 20, 2008 - Crow is a good, solid place to go if you're looking for pre-show or pre-game food in lower Queen Anne. The service is friendly, and the food is pretty good. Prices can be all over the map, though. One of the day's entree specials when we went was scallops. My husband ordered it, and it turned out to be four scallops for $25! He enjoyed them, and said it was enough food, but the price was too high. On the other hand, I ordered the "smashed potato cake" side for $3, which was substantial, delicious, and a real bargain.

Teahouse Kuan Yin
"Good shopping for a tea lover"
March 05, 2008 - Teahouse Kuan Yin has a decent selection of teas (although I've seen better). What I really appreciate is their selection of tea paraphernalia: teapots, cups, tins, mugs, strainers, etc. It is the ONLY place in the city where I've found cool-looking tea cozies that are not covered in gramma floweryness.

Vij's (in Vancouver)
"Is any food worth a 2.5 hour wait?"
March 03, 2008 - We arrived at 6:15 on a Saturday and didn't get a table until after 8:30. We spent the first hour of our wait in a nearby bar, and the rest wedged into Vij's noisy bar like sardines. By the time we sat down, we were grouchy and not properly hungry (due to the drinks and little fried snacks they occasionally passed around the bar). The food was fine, especially the lamb popsicles, but we wouldn't go back. We'll just use Vij's great cookbook and make the food at home!

Smash Wine Bar & Bistro
"Great touch with fried foods"
February 25, 2008 - Smash has what you might expect from a wine bar: big cheese and wine selection, knowledgeable sommelier, classy atmosphere. To my surprise, though, the things we liked best were the fried items we ordered. Specifically, the duck spring rolls and ginger calamari were extremely good. We went for their happy hour menu expecting to have a light and cheap meal. Instead, we indulged in tasty (but not too heavy) fried stuff and paid more than we were planning to because we had to order several items (and then there was all the wine).
