Stumptown Coffee "One of the best" March 30, 2008 - Stumptown makes one of the best espressos anywhere. Fabulous flavor, astonishing texture, and no needless water to ruin the coffee. That's all I've had there and all I need to keep coming back, but they also have a fine, unusual selection of fair-trade, shade-grown beans. And a nice area to sit, smartly configured to be comfortable and at the same time discourage people from hanging out with their laptops for endless hours (a curse on coffee shops much like old ladies with magazines were during my youth in Germany).Service is fast and fine. Tip generously, they deserve it. |

Dulces Latin Bistro "Go! Don't miss it!" March 30, 2008 - We live a walk away from Dulces and forget about it much too often. Then we visit and say, "We should really come much more often," and go off again. Makes me feel bad, but Dulce's always welcomes us back and makes us feel as if we'd just been there yesterday, with the same warm greeting, the friendly, never overbearing conversation, the professional service, the excellent, thoughtfully made dishes, and the long and surprisingly affordable wine list. Dulces is not cheap, but very fairly priced, considering the quality, and liberally shares its profits with good causes, every year, for example, raking in a goodly sum at Dine Out for Life.Recently, I had a portabello mushroom soup that was a model of flavorful restraint. With excellent texture and minimal tinkering and no needless ingredients, it came out just perfect. The zarzuela was a veritable museum of marine life, beautifully coherent and balanced. So go. Dulces is good for your body and nourishes the soul you didn't even know you had. |

Ascada Bistro "What a bad idea that was" March 30, 2008 - I wish I would have remembered reading the P-I review of Ascada listed here, but no, the weather was frigid and dropping sleet, the door was open, and we went inside. We got seated and began to dry out. We really should have left at that point.Much later, the glasses of wine and food arrived. The wine was barely this side of corked. Food was oversauced and oddly indistinct, in mall-size portions. The 'risotto', for example, was simply slightly undercooked rice with mushrooms, and lacked all character and flavor. We never saw the waitperson again; eventually, I tracked somebody down at the bar to help me pay. When we left, there were still patrons who had ordered before we did and had not received their entrees yet. Who knows why they didn't walk out, maybe they were not familiar with the area or tired of the cold. The glasses weren't exactly super clean; nobody refilled water; bread was not given.Unfortunately, given the neighborhood, Ascada can keep going for some time with one-time visitors who go to some or other event at Seattle Center and never return. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Vios Cafe & Marketplace "Food and service great, but the place is big-time stressful" March 18, 2008 - Vios' food is excellent, no doubt. I thought it was fairly priced, too, and I'm cheap. Service I found fast and very friendly even when the place was a nightmare of screaming children and their unruly parents, who just let them howl and run around. That part was stressful and horrible. What are these people thinking? This place might be best late at night, or during weekdays.I don't understand the attraction of the communal table concept, unless one gets lucky and people open up a bit. For the most part, it's treated like a sort of embarrassment, "I'm sitting here but this is my private time and I don't really see you," and I wish restaurants would skip to the next fad already. I'm from Europe, and, while restaurant reviewers keep telling us that communal tables are SO European, I couldn't agree. Outside of festivals and special occasions, people usually don't want to put up with that. |

Cafe Dharwin "Don't miss this great little place" January 29, 2008 - Cafe Dharwin is one very bright spot in the middle of the urban wasteland of northwest Capitol Hill, where freeways scramble underneath pedestrians who try to survive the traffic heading for or coming from those freeways. Listen up pedestrians: Here's a fabulous place where you can gather strength and confidence. Excellent espresso and coffee drinks and friendly, efficient service. You never wait here for somebody's liquid dessert to be brewed, because the baristas are good and fast. Oh, and nice baked goods can be had here, too. |
