April 14, 2008 - for vietnamese food, this place was pretty good for not being my mom's kitchen. very few chic vietnamese resturants offer banh cuon (steamed crepes) and these were pretty close to what you can make at home. i saw a few customers order banh xeo (sizzling crepes) which were served with heaps of fresh granishes, which is the proper way to eat them. the service lacks something fundamental (like remembering what the customers ordered), but other than that, the food and atmosphere were both very good. i would defintely bring my parents here.

March 24, 2008 - This place is fantastic. The menu is extensive and inventive. The ingredients are exceptionally fresh and well handled. I have yet to have something I did not like from this restaurant. I even like this place better than Slanted Door in San Francisco.
Among my favorites: Tamarind Tree Rolls, Duck Salad, Lemongrass Halibut, Stuffed Escargot, Baby Clams and Rice Cracker, Fried Banana Cake.
It is funny that the reviewer 'explorer' hated it so much. I have never heard anything else bad about the place. It is also funny that 'explorer' has no favorite restaurants, no wishlist, no friends, and exactly two reviews and two votes. One positive for Lemon Leaf Restaurant in Renton and one negative for Tamarind Tree. It's almost like they worked for Lemon Leaf or something...
For a similar quality Vietnamese restaurant in Seattle you should also try Green Leaf on 8th. I like their pho a little better than TT's but they are both good.

February 01, 2008 - This restaurant is great. With phenomenal and very creative gourmet Vietnamese food - easily the best I've had in Seattle - it's no wonder that the restaurant is always packed on weekends.
Also note that it seems like they've cleaned up their act with the health dept.

No_photo_small "Large menu and 5 dishes out of 6 were good" by Samit C (13 reviews)
January 25, 2008 - Had dinner there this evening with five other friends. Pomegranate martinis were really good as a starter (thanks Tysan) and the quail and spring roll appetizers went down well as well. Of the six entrees we ordered, five were superb and one bland. Would definitely try this place again.

November 19, 2007 - I'm not at all going to defend bad health inspections, but looking at the King County records for Tamarind Tree doesn't reveal anything out of the ordinary for many places. Here's the link where you can look up all King County inspections. http://www.decadeonline.com/main.phtml?agency=skc . Tamarind Tree has had some serious violations, and some inspections with 0 penalty points. The same is true of Canlis or just about any other place you check. So I wouldn't get too up in arms.

No_photo_small "very dirty and noisy restaurant" by explorer (2 reviews)
November 13, 2007 - I used to like this restaurant so much but i ran away after several times visiting it.
I saw the cooks touching food with dirty and disgusting hands. Also, they picked the dropped food up and put back on the plate so many times. I have a friend working there. He told me that those actions happens all the time. They always fail for health department checking. Employees there have to pay for their meals with full price.
Once I took my friends there for a dinner for 6 but we were seated in a small table for 4. When a waiter taking order from the table next to mine, he put his butt almost on my table because the distance between the tables is very close. They try to make more money more than respecting customers and employees. I and my friends could not hear each other because it was too noisy instead of romantic and relaxing atmosphere as said so.
I just found a new upscale Vietnamese restaurant in Renton with all the food you see in Tamarind Tree and so many more. They are clean, friendly, professional and etc. The atmosphere is perfect. You don't have to wait so long to be seated as Tamarind Tree. The music is soft and romantic. They have a banquet room for up to 70 people with a private bar, a lot of pretty ceramics and art works. They also have full bar and a long list of wine that I have never seen before.
Come to this restaurant and check it out. I'm pretty sure that you will more than like it. Wish you nice dinners there.
Take high way 167 south and it's right the Ikia exit (180th st)

June 02, 2007 - The overall experience was a definite plus, although the food was not any better than many  hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese. I recommend going and enjoying a tasty tamarind martini, some upscale Bún chả giò, and good craic at least once. Then move on and enjoy Pho Bac II all the more.

May 31, 2007 - Very good interpretation of some unique dishes from North, Central and Southern Vietnam. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety; it was as if I made a culinary trip throughout Vietnam in one sitting (and a very full stomach after!). If you are not very familiar with the cuisine, get some assistance from the friendly waiters or a friend who knows. Some dishes are very hard to describe, but once you taste them, they are unforgettable. I had Banh Beo and Beef Rolls as appetizers, followed by Bun Oc. We came with no reservation on a Sunday night at 9:30, and we were seated right away. I highly recommend this restaurant. Also, ambiance is tastefully decorative and more modern than most restaurants in I-District. I loved it! I'll be back. Huong Caitlin Nguyen

April 17, 2007 - Great atmosphere, setting it apart from the typical chinatown restaurant.  Portions are large, presentation nice, and the taste pretty good although a bit Westernized.  For atmosphere, this is the place to go.  For more authentic, yummy Vietnamese, I'd gladly go to the other restaurants with basic decor and fluorescent light.

March 26, 2007 - Picture good, authentic Vietnamese cuisine.  Now swap the expected white flourescents for candles and rich colored walls, swap the rickety tables for a waterfall patio, swap the impatient guy for black-clad waiters, and you get the picture of Tamarind Tree.  Absolutely amazing food.  Fast fast service.  And the price stays below $10 for most entrees.  Amazing.

November 08, 2006 - Tasty dishes fresh and complex flavors and interactive make your own rolls dishes were combining in a perfect storm of vietnamese food to make this a new regular on my urban spoon list.
However a tip from an anonymous friend (post-dining experience) regarding alleged health code violations prompted me to check out the King Co. health code violations website.  READ NO FURTHER IF YOU ENJOY EATING AT THIS RESTAURANT
Some simple investigation reveals numerous health code violations related to cleanliness, lack of hand washing, presence of rodents (!) insects or animals etc.  The list is long.  I think they closed the place down at one point.  Sorry to burst the bubble if you like this place.  http://www.decadeonline.com/insp.phtml?agency=skc&forceresul ts=1&record_id=PR0004257
