"Salade Nicoise and Veal with Chanterelles"
by Terri Nakamura
(2 reviews) September 06, 2007 - Having recently spent 5 days in Nice, my husband and I were craving a salade Nicoise. We entered Mazaran (the only customers at 6:30 on a Wednesday night) and found the decor to be inviting. We shared two dishes: Salade Nicoise and veal. They far exceeded anything we had in Provence and this was among the best meals we've had anywhere in the world. The Nicoise was composed of tuna with a dollop of a tasty aioli-type mayonnase, Nicoise olives, French green beans, baby new potatoes, butter lettuce, rolled anchovy fillets, heirloom tomatoes and was perfectly dressed. The veal was tender and tastily seasoned and the accompanying fresh chanterelles and gruyere potatos were out of this world. With 2 glasses each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plus a 25+ percent tip, the meal came to $95. Interesting to note: It isn't necessarily a good value to buy a bottle compared to the per-glass prices. Also, the owner/chef was also the hostess, waitress, and server. This means she had her hands full with 10 customers. It may be different on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays. Go early and enjoy! |
