"High expectations..."
by RCase
(12 reviews)
November 26, 2009 - Likes it - I had pretty high expectations for this place, based on recommendations from friends and reviews on this site. Upon being seated, I initially wasn't impressed with the size of the place and the wait staff. While the appetizer (fried zucchini) was very good, I thought the salad was a bit disappointing. The house salad dressing (a balsamic vinegarette) was quite average - even though they sell it by the bottle. But my overall expectations were met - and then some - by the entrees we had. Their unique preparations made for very tasty dishes. The portions were more than adequate. This is what I expect from a local eatery trying to distinguish itself. |

September 15, 2009 - Likes it - The 17th street cafe was one of our favorite places to dine before our daughter was born. It is cozy and the staff are very friendly. The food absolutley rocks! One of my personal favorites then was the twin filets in hunters sauce. It was out of this world. |

September 03, 2009 - Doesn't like it - Just returned from dinner and it was awful. 4 of us went each having something different...no one liked their meal. It is way over priced too. We will not be going back. |

June 01, 2009 - Likes it - Just off of Carson, it's small and personable. t's the perfect date night place and it's always a surprise for people that haven't seen it before. It has a Valet service just next to Nakama, so you don't have to struggle for parking. The service is outstanding and the menu is varied for everyone. 1 person likes this review Recommend |

November 02, 2008 - I have been dining at 17th St. Cafe for a long time and must say it always remains to have fantastic food. The atmosphere (romantic, cozy, friendly) and staff - not to mention the owner- are all fantastic. I just can't wait to return. This truly is my "comfort" restaurant. It is perfect in every way - food, drink, atmosphere, staff and the owner who always comes by your table for a little conversation to see how you liked it. 1 person likes this review Recommend |

"Southside Favorite"

August 21, 2008 - Likes it - I have been to the cafe a dozen times over the last few years and every time I've enjoyed my food, and from the plates of my co-diners. The atmosphere is asthetically pleasing without being overly genuine or kitch. I am always impressed with the level of execution in the pairing of flavors & the quality of the product. My server Chatty Kathy is adept at serving without being fakey or long-winded, and I've enjoyed her service every time she has been my server. She also doesn't rattle off the descriptions in such a way that I can tell she's never actually eaten the food, or have some arbitrary favorite depending on what is ordered. I should mention that being genuine on my part at such length has a lot to do with the fact that I am a cook/server by trade, and finding a successful restaurant to go to is something I particularly enjoy, and it is a ten minute walk from my house. 1 person likes this review Recommend |

August 20, 2008 - Likes it - Last week my friend and I had dinner at 17th St Cafe. I had the Sausage and Pepper Ravioli, which was great. My friend had the Pasta Serrenti, which was one of the most fabulous dishes I have EVER tasted! The blend of flavors was wonderfully complex, but not overwhelming. In addition to the fantastic food, the friendliness and attention of the staff and the owner was, as usual, what really made the dining experience most enjoyable! Keep up the good work, folks! 1 person likes this review Recommend |

August 18, 2008 - Likes it - We were on the Southside to go to the City Theatre and planned on having dinner some where on Carson St. As we were parking our car we ran into a friend and asked him for a recommendation. He told us about the 17th. St. Cafe. Boy do we owe him big time. We had a wonderful dinner. The food was fantastic. I had the London Broil special which was cut so well and was so tender. My friend had the New York Strip with a sherry butter sauce that was to die for. We were treated so well by Pat the owner and ALL of the Wait staff you would have thought we were long lost friends. We our so HAPPY we found the 17th St. Cafe and we can't wait to go back. 1 person likes this review Recommend |

August 16, 2008 - Likes it - When my husband and I visit his family in Pittsburgh, we always make a special request to visit 17th Street cafe. We love everything so much-from the speciality drinks at the bar to the appetizers, salads, soups, entrees, and desserts. We have never been disappointed on the service or the food. The atmosphere is very comfy and the staff is there for their customers. It's one of the few places you can get everything in one place. The fried zucchini and red pepper soup are amazing! 1 person likes this review Recommend |

August 15, 2008 - Brought out of town guests to the 17th Street Cafe and they loved the sausage ravioli and the London Broil steak. That night they also had a pineapple upside down martini that was unusual and tasty. My wife had three. We have been there for lunch and dinner several times and been impressed with the menu and the staff. Great place!!! |

"Fake Reviews????"
by Troy

August 14, 2008 - - Is it just me, or does it seem like the 17th Street Cafe is trying to toot their own horn by writing up and posting a bunch of good reviews???? All those posts are by folks with only one review to their name, and almost all are posted on the same day (they post 3 per day it seems). It just looks suspicious (and dishonest) to me!!!Anybody REAL actually eat there??? 4 people like this review Recommend |

August 13, 2008 - Likes it - I've been a fan since the day it opened. Living across the street does have it's perks. I would rather spend a couple of extra bucks and order quality, than walk only a block to save a buck and eat a less than special meal that barely fills me! 17th Street food Rocks and the staff is the BEST in the South Side! |

August 11, 2008 - Likes it - My wife and I recently visited Pittsburgh for the first time, we were fortunate to stumble on the 17th St. Cafe and what a treat it turned out to be. Growing up in Boston, we had a number of these hidden gems in obscure neighborhoods. The 17th street cafe is a unique combination of great food, atmosphere and service. The moment you walk thru the door, you know you're in for a special evening. The menu is diverse, with a number of Italian specialties all presented with an emphasis on quality. You know you've had a great experience when after the meal, you retire to the bar for an after dinner drink. You don't want your evening to end. I would highly recommend a visit to the 17th Street Cafe, I know I'll make a special trip to Pittsburgh for a return visit. |

"simply put, a gem in the Southside"

August 10, 2008 - Likes it - I brought a friend to 17th Street Cafe recently because I liked it so much the first time. The owner, Pat, is an extremely likeable fellow and treated us as 'old friends'. He and his servers went out of their way to provide us with a terrific meal and a memorable experience. The restaurant is fun, charming and relaxed and of course the abundant food was delicious. Favorites were the asparagus and turkey sandwich, the chicken dish with eggplant and buffalo mozzarella, the canoli and tiramisu. You must try the 17th Street cosmo! |

August 07, 2008 - Likes it - This is the kind of neighborhood joint that makes me wish this was my neighborhood. Four of us went there four lunch the other day and all of us wanted what the other people ordered. Don't miss the Reuben "Sandwich" that uses potato pancakes instead of bread. It is truly inspired. |

August 07, 2008 - Likes it - We love places like this (but they are hard to find) as soon as you walk in, the first thing to hit you in this cozy cafe it that it has real personality. The owner greeted us (a rare occurrence at other restaurants) and the servers made us feel like old friends. But the proof is in the pudding - or should I say the chicken. Our meal was great, from the best salad dressing I have ever found to the grilled chicken with grilled eggplant and tomato. Don't let the "Cafe" in the name deceive you this is a hip little bistro.Food ***Service ***Environment ***This is the only place I have found that can do all three with out paying our typical over $100 a couple. |

"Amazing!"

August 07, 2008 - Likes it - I am a restaurant photographer from Vancouver Canada. I travel to restaurants all over North America and I have to say that the 17th street Cafe is in my top five favorite restaurants for the price range. Inexpensive gourmet food is rare and this place kicks ass. The stuffed banana peppers are my absolute favorite - the last time I was through I went there four days in a row. See Pat the owner...great guy and great staff. It is small and not too many seats but definitely worth the wait. 1 person likes this review Recommend |
