October 04, 2009 - Likes it - I had a terrific meal at Rivas. Asked waiter and family co-owner Antonio for ordering advice, he did not steer us wrong. Started with the ceviche, guac and plantains. Yum. I had a tangy chicken and rice dish, and my companion ordered shrimp with rice. We were both very pleased. Worth the trip. BYOB.

"Attentive service" by John (16 reviews)
September 12, 2009 - Likes it - Had a fine lunch here of seafood nachos and the pork medallions. The owner made sure we were taken care of and was courteous and friendly. Restaurant is a bit off the beaten path across from the cement plant, but worth the effort to find. The homemade Riva's juice of tropical fruits was outstanding and very large, more than enough for your whole meal.

"So sad . . . Rivas is closed!!" by Troy (148 reviews)
July 11, 2009 - Really likes it - Was passing through Carnegie today, drove past and noticed that the place was empty. Rivas is now closed!! This is sad because I really enjoyed eating there. :-(

"Truly Amazing Food" by davekennon (1 review)
February 12, 2009 - Really likes it - The best, home-cooked meal I have had in a long time.  The prices are rights and the staff are delightful.  I think it's the find of the whole city.

March 09, 2008 - Doesn't like it - Hey Jewelz...are they paying you or are you one of the owners giving your own reviews?  Also, it's Salsa mastery....not Merengue, genius.  Yes, focus on the food, but don't forget the environment of the place.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion... you must be one of those people who feels as though your opinion means more than anyone else's.

"Top Notch" by Jewelz (1 review)
March 04, 2008 - Likes it - If you enjoy comfy, quirky atmosphere...
fresh, healthy food....  huge portions...
& a knowledgeable, friendly staff...
you will leave Rivas thoroughly pleased as we did.
I would include them in the top echelon of ethnic restaurants in the area with... Aladdin's & LuLu's Noodles.
The sirloin with jalepeno cream sauce was perfect.
I don't usually write "foodie reviews", but ... this place is a gem.  I found the last couple of reviews laughable.
Lets focus on the FOOD people, not your grand delusions of past merengue mastery.
Bring a bottle, relax, enjoy.

February 21, 2008 - Doesn't like it - I agree, be wary...something just wasn't right with my meal...plus, the beach chair idea is kind of "chintzy"...and where did the so-called Salsa experts learn their dancing techniques, let alone ability to teach?  As someone who has actually had salsa dancing lessons in a Latin American country and could be considered an expert, I was not impressed to say the least.  But, I guess that's why the lessons are free.

"Be wary" by rv (1 review)
February 21, 2008 - Doesn't like it - Be wary....one of the sons has had MANY MAJOR run-ins with the law....and the claim that they make everything fresh daily with no lard is  not credible.  Any real foodie would know.

"Date Correction . . ." by Troy (148 reviews)
December 02, 2007 - Really likes it - The Grand Reopening at Rivas is scheduled for January 19th, 2008, not the 20th, like I mentioned before, and it is by invitation only.

"Nicaraguan food in Pittsburgh!!" by Troy (148 reviews)
November 20, 2007 - Really likes it - We just discovered this relatively new place in Pittsburgh that serves, can you believe it, Nicaraguan food!
This little family run taqueria seems a bit out of place in downtown Carnegie, but the food and service were very good.
Nicaraguan is similar to Mexican food, but is has a few unique differences, like sides of plantain or yuca (a root vegetable) along with rice and beans.
Although they specialize in meat and seafood items, they also have three vegetarian items on the menu. Don't know if they could be made vegan or not.
This place is closing down temporarily on Nov. 30 2007 so the family can go back to Nicaragua, and will be having a grand re-opening celebration on January 20th, 2008 with a new menu.
They are worth checking out, and for the adventuresome, they also offer salsa dancing lessons on Friday and Saturday night!
