"Beer and food go hand in hand"

August 15, 2008 - Really likes it - Located in a decent area downtown with street parking and a couple local parking lots (they also validate for the lot below the building but there are cheaper lots close by). Separate bar area with booths and formal dining area. They also offer pool tables that charge around $10/hr (free pool with lunch but limited hours). Not very brightly lit atmosphere but then again there isn't much to see. Long bar that's usually fairly packed with people during happy hour so plan on standing or waiting a while for seating if you go during those times. Food is the same at all Rock Bottom locations (as is the decor) so if you've been to one you've been to them all. Typical burger and fries, steaks, a little seafood, some pasta, and pizzas. Most is pretty good and the prices aren't too bad for the area. The beer features 5 full-time beers and rotating seasonals (usually 1 or 2 seasonals on at a time). The beer quality has declined a bit in the past years and has gotten to be a bit more watery. Friends and I use to frequent Rock Bottom a couple times a week but now get there maybe once every 6 months (took me less then 6 months to get on the 1/2 a barrel club). Seasonals are usually pretty good. They use to offer a brewer's dinner every 3 months or so. Usually $35 or so for a 5 course meal with a different beer paired with the course. They have had issues with management in the past year (had at least 3 or 4 store managers in that time) and the brewer's dinners have suffered (only one in the past year that I can recall and they wanted $55 for a lame menu of Mexican food, no thanks). I would love to see the new management turn the dinners around and have them again. It was great to share an amazing meal and great beers with other beer lovers from time to time. The special beers made just for the dinner were great too (Bourbon Barrel Aged Intoxicator Dopplebock, Cherry Belgian Tripel, etc). Should note that if you enjoy Rock Bottom you should sign up for the free Mug Club. You get a .5 liter glass instead of a pint and earn free prizes. Much better then the lame club at Old Chicago (also owned by Rock Bottom). Overall Rock Bottom isn't a bad place to go for a couple beers and a meal but there are better brewpubs in town that exceed it by far. 1 person likes this review Recommend |
