"Pretty Good...4.375" by Devin (44 reviews)
November 11, 2009 - Likes it - I ate here once in early 2007. I took my now wife there for one our first dates in the Birmingham. I remember the sushi being very fresh and tasty. The only thing negative is I remember that the presentation was a little sloppy and the rolls fell apart. We went on a weeknight and I do not remember it being so busy that the chef would have been rushed. I do remember the service being very good and we did not feel rushed through our meal which happens often at other places in this town. Since moving from Homewood, we have not given it another shot. I would not let a little sloppy sushi turn you off. Go there.

"Not Thai, Not Sushi... more "fusion"" by findbenjamin (3 reviews)
October 15, 2009 - Doesn't like it - Dined here last night based on the recommendation of the Doubletree Birmingham.
I had the Nam Tok, which was a play on lettuce wraps, but it was served with a quarter-wedge of cabbage, with lettuce actually wilted in with the beef. I ordered Thai hot, and it didn't leave me in a sweat. If anything it was more vinegary then spicy, which didn't do much for the dish. The beef was tough, so it was a challenge to eat as the menu suggested.
If it was marketed as fusion, I could have understood a few more of Chef Surin's choices, but as an "authentic Thai" restaurant, I couldn't. Fish sauce, a key ingredient in many Thai dishes was notably absent from my friend's Shrimp Green Curry (which, having made myself, know that fish sauce is added here).
That said, it wasn't overly pricey, the ambience was pleasant, the waitstaff friendly, and service prompt. I wouldn't return, but if your palette tends towards fusion, you may want to give it a shot.

"Food not bad, but not authentic Thai." by Charlie (38 reviews)
October 13, 2009 - Doesn't like it - This place doesn't cook authentic Thai food... they don't even use fish sauce in their preparation (which is a must in many Thai dishes). All of the food is certainly edible, but it is bland and catered towards those whose taste buds aren't accustomed to real Thai.
I'd always refer someone coming to Birmingham to (1) Taste of Thailand, (2) Thai Emerald, or (3) Thai House before any of the Surins, but if you are going to eat here, I'd recommend the nam tok beef.

"Disappointed" by Ashia (1 review)
August 23, 2009 - Doesn't like it - For over a year a friend has tried to get me to dine with her @ Surin West. I recently ate Thai food for the first time @ Chi-Tung's in Chicago. When I arrived back in B'ham, I could not wait to eat some more of it. One Sunday we decided to stop in. My husband and I were rather approached (not warmly greeted) by the waiter. We started off with Ebi Ten Maki and I asked for Soy Sauce. He grabs the bottle off the next table and it had sauce on the bottom of it which smeared over our table and he was not going to wipe it up until I asked him to do so. I order Thai Pad Noodles(same dish I ordered in Chicago). I must say that it is a shame the shrimp tasted old and B'ham is closer to the ocean than Chicago. The noodles were dry there was no sauce, I asked him about it and he said that they just get sauteed in a sauce but no sauce comes over them. All in all, the thai pad noodles at this restaurant is not good and this dish is supposed to be Thailand's national dish. The service was horrible, the food was so-so, and I am not excited about coming back for anything else......

July 30, 2009 - Really likes it - A Southside staple, Surin has always been a favorite Thai/fusion spot in Birmingham. I've been to the original Surin in Atlanta, & they approximate each other. I love the Thai noodle bowl and sometimes I like to have the warm chicken salad. The lunch specials are very reasonable. The catfish is spicy and just right. I always enjoy the cocoanut soup the comes with the lunch specials. The light, cool spring rolls are well done here. They handle large groups well and the decor is pretty upscale. Parking close is always an issue, beware of the enterprising parking lots who will have you booted in a heartbeat! Enjoy the walk (we all need the exercise!). Don't forget this is a great choice for Sunday lunch.

"Rude For Take Out" by Natalie (11 reviews)
July 30, 2009 - While in Birmingham for work, I made two visits to Surin West with co-workers. The first visit was great, the food was really good and the waitor was friendly and helpful. My sushi rolls were great and my co-worker enjoyed his spicy sea food. We liked it so much we decided to bring the rest of our co workers here, but decided to get take out. We called ahead and they said they would have it ready, and thats where everything went wrong. We picked up the food and noticed before we left that there were no chop sticks, forks, or soy sauce. We asked the bartended and he said it was in there. Out on the sidewalk we opened the packages and didn't see any chopsticks. We went back and politely asked for some and the bartender refused claiming they were in there. We checked again, nothing. Finally we insisted and got our chopsticks. When we got back to our hotel, we noted there were in fact not chopsticks and only one to two packets of soy sauce included. The food was good, but the service would prevent me from ever getting take out on a future visit.

"Good..." by threeputt81 (1 review)
June 25, 2009 - This is a good pseudo-Thai place, but how it got to be ranked No. 1 in Bham on here is beyond me. It's not in the same universe as the city's best restaurants. ... That said, you can't go wrong with the traditional or Americanized Thai on the menu. But don't order the sushi. It's below average.

March 29, 2009 - Doesn't like it - Honestly, I can't complain about the food or the price-point or even the atmosphere but crikey the service in all my years has consistently been sour, distant and just not pleasant.

"Good Sushi" by Del Johnston (3 reviews)
March 18, 2009 - Likes it - I have only been to Surin West once. I was told to get the sushi, so I did. I cannot remember which it was, but it was fairly good. I have had better, but I was not disappointed. I will definitely try a different sushi next time. I do remember, that the portions were small. Next time I will order other items too. My date had the Angel Wing Chicken. It was NOT good. I tasted it and would not recommend it. She did comment that she would come back to try something different. I like the atmosphere, but it was a little noisy. It was packed however, so that could be the reason. Altogether, it is a nice romantic change for a date.

"Love it but fine dining?" by Amy (1 review)
March 03, 2009 - Likes it - Love Surin. Was turned onto it by having a coupon in daughter's school fund raiser and am hooked. We go almost once a week-that's alot since I work nights. My only complaint is the wait staff is very, very noisy. But friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. We love the food and wine prices are very reasonable.

"Great Sushi and drinks with hit or miss service." by Brandon (8 reviews)
February 10, 2009 - Likes it - The Sushi and mixed drinks are top notch. The sushi is reasonably priced while the alcohol is as pricey as it is good. The entrees are average to good but priced accurately for what you get. The service has been hit or miss the many times I've been there.
