First there are many places in Louisville to get good (and rare beers)...There's no need to put up with a pretentious (I mean real pretender) so and so who's going to treat you badly and then overcharge you for it. The only good thing about this guy opening this place is that he's gone from another restaurant before he ruined them. If you like, rude, no service then by all means.....here ya go.
I love beer. I love food. I love small, locally owned establishments. I love owners with true passion for what they do. This place is heaven on earth for me.
I'm a Cincinnatian who travels to Louisville several times a year and I can honestly say that Sergio's might be my favorite bar not only in Louisville but..ever! The first thing you notice when you walk in are the beer taps everywhere. Now, many of those are souveniers of past-tapped beers, but look closely and you will notice that there is a HUGE number of tapped craft (and only craft) beers. With cases of style-appropriate glasses. He does it right, here! I was a recent legal drinker the first time I went and asked for help on what to choose because the beer list can be a little overwhelming. He was very helpful in steering me toward something to fit my tastes. This beer bar forever changed my perception of how to approach brews. Visit this bar with a conversationalist, order a couple of Old Rasputins or maybe some Dreadnaught, and sip on those 10% beers for several hours and I guarantee that the little fire that burns when one is happy and slightly intoxicated will be kindled at Sergio's.
Sergio's is truly an amazing place! This review could go on forever, but you need to experience Sergio's yourself. If you need help finding the place go to mapquest if you don't have GPS. It's a little difficult to find the first few times but you'll get used to it.They also had (they may still have) great beer specials on some of their nearly 50 taps. The food there is OK. It's not the best but it has improved since we have started visiting. The only time the food is really "good" is during the beer dinners. I believe they have stopped doing those however. It was a really good deal for $50 something.I encourage you to check this place out! You need to experience this yourself. It is well worth it!
My father, sister, brother and I came here on Saturday for my fathers birthday. My father loves Canadian beer, and not many places have it readily available, so when I saw the online menu I was SUPER excited to take him here. My sister likes to try new beers, but she is unsure of what to choose. Reading previous reviews made me think that the employees here would be ready to answer all beer related questions and steer my family to some great selections. The atmosphere is neat- soooo many beers on tap, lots and lots of coolers with a huge selection of beers from all over the world. We were seated and looked over the menu (I was not drinking as I am pregnant, so my father and sister were looking). We decided we would really need the server to steer them in getting a good beer. When the server came to the table and asked if we were ready, I asked him if we told him what my father and sister normally drink, could he give a suggestion of a beer for them to try. He said yes. My father told him he likes Moosehead and many wheat beers. The server suggested one for him, and so my father said, ok.BUT- my sister said, "I like Heineken", and the dude laughed at her. Really? Yeah, I see a comment where someone is glad Bud-light drinkers are laughed off. What in the world is funny about someone saying they like Heineken....especially while ASKING for a suggestion on a new beer to drink. Not pretentious? Oh, yes it is. I was super disappointed- we really wanted to have fun and try new beers and enjoy my fathers birthday. I really REALLY wanted to go back when I wasn't pregnant and enjoy some new beers myself, too. If this is how you are going to treat people, good luck staying in business.
I like bars where people who order Bud are laughed out of the place. Not only is this that kind of place, but Sergio spent the better part of the evening chatting with us about the German breweries of Brazil. We loved it. No air conditioning, though, so if you can't tough it out, don't say no one warned you.
Romantic?!?!... If you think romantic is dining in a recycling container full of empty bottles while eating awful Mexican food, then maybe this place does have a "romantic" vibe. For me Sergio's has the worst atmosphere... You go to this place for the beer, but certainly not the food. Be forewarned that he is known for ripping-off his customers so be sure to ask how much everything costs before you are served. It is cash only as well. There is an ATM machine in the restaurant that he owns and collects the ridiculously high surcharge on... So if you forget to bring cash, then he's ripping you off in more ways than one. I won't even get started about how dirty the glassware is, but let me just say that it's WRONG! Anyone reading this should also be aware that his underage son, "Eric", listed him on Urbanspoon and if you click on Eric's profile you'll see that he has rated that he "doesn't like" 123 other local restaurants (but he's probably only been to a... more »Romantic?!?!... It's a shady establishment and I wouldn't reccomend this place to anyone! If you like good food and good beer, try New Albanian first (you can find both of their listings on Eric's list of 123 local restaurants he doesn't like... Imagine that!)
i don't know about that review that says the place is not pretentious. the owner does not make you feel welcome; if you're not a connoisseur, he doesn't seem to be interested in you and it's nearly impossible to get his attention. my friend refers to him as "the beer nazi." that said, i go sometimes because the beer is amazing.
To say that my experience at Sergio's World Beers was unsatisfactory would be an extreme understatement. My short stay at this establishment was the worst dining experience I have had. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the wide variety of beers or the food quality because I never received any service to order any of the restaurant's menu items. Let me start from the beginning. Some friends and I were looking for a new and interesting restaurant to go to for our Saturday evening. When we found Sergio's provided an assortment of beer selections and some new and interesting food options, according to Urban Spoon, we decided we would check it out. I called the phone number listed under "contact information" on the Sergio's website for location and pricing. The man who answered was less than friendly. When I inquired about happy hour pricing- he responded "What? Happy hour? I don't know, I work in the store room..." I called the phone number listed under "contact information" on the Sergio's website for location and pricing. The man who answered was less than friendly. When I inquired about happy hour pricing- he responded "What? Happy hour? I don't know, I work in the store room..." This should have been the first sign to not go to this restaurant. But, we decided to give it another chance. Trying to find the restaurant was the second issue. It is located on Story Ave and Frankfort Ave. We drove past it several times before we could narrow down the possible location. The reason being, that instead of having a sign out for "Sergio's World Beers," it has a big sign out that reads "FUSION." ??? We parked in a side lot on Frankfort Avenue that looked like a junk yard and traveled up to Story Ave to find the restaurant. Because of the unclear titling of the restaurant we walked into a bate shop/bar next door where we were rudely told that they were not Sergio's, and to "get out" and "go next door." We walked past a pile of junk (old mattresses, rotten wood and a old baby pool), I kid you not, to get into the restaurant we were looking for. When we walked in we were greeted by the strong smell of fried food and stuffy hot air. Trust me.... this was all we were greeted by. Because the third problem I experienced while trying to eat at Sergio's was the non-existent service. There was a bartender who offered a dirty look and no instruction on seating or menus. We wandered around the establishment, passing 2 servers (I guess) and a dishwasher who also offered not even a "hi." I had to look down at myself to see if I had magically changed in to a rat, because that was how I was treated. We had to walk to the bar and pick up some menu's on our own and seat ourselves. The fourth reason I would not recommend Sergio's to anyone was that the establishment itself was absolutely disgusting. As I mentioned earlier there was a pile of trash in front of the entrance, apparently no air conditioning, a stale smell lingering in the air, and the dilapidated/deteriorating look was not endearing. After we sat at our chosen table for 15 minutes, having had 2 servers (I assume?) and a bartender pass us multiple times with no greeting or recognition other than dirty looks and frowns, we decided we would not be dining there that evening. I urge you not to go to Sergio's World Beer's (aka "Fusion"), unless you like to be treated like a parasite, stink like a fry-daddy for hours after leaving, and to dine in a seedy/dirty atmosphere. I must say, I have never been treated so poorly by a restaurant before. One might wonder if they want new patrons to attend this restaurant. I would say they do not.
Despite the previous comments about this restaurant being negative my group and I had a wonderful time. The beer selection is stellar, the food quite good, atmosphere even better. If you are looking for a pretentious environment and wine go to Morton's, this isn't your place.
The few times that I've been to Sergio's the food's been great, especially the cheesesteak with seasoned fries. Yes, the atmosphere is a little different first walking in, but you get use to it. Though it does suck that it's cash only with a not-so-reasonable atm. I suggest that everyone at least go and try it. If the atmosphere is the problem you can always get it to go.
