Union Square Grill "Happy Hour" December 13, 2006 - The happy hour here is a favorite pre-show destination for us when going to see a play at ACT or the 5th Avenue. Although the scrumtious truffle fries are gone from the menu, we were recently told by one of the waitstaff that he could still get a batch whipped up for us. They are worth asking for - but the sweet potato fry substitution, with their delicious, if mysterious, condiment accompaniment, are also a fry to behold. |

Other Coast Cafe "sangwiches" December 12, 2006 - Sangwiches is how my East Coast grampa used to say "sandwiches." I always remember that when I order one of these plump little mothers. These sandwiches seem (rather than jet here from NYC) to float to the Emerald City from some land of very, very hungry, very, very, very fat people. The sandwiches are massive. Don't let your pride talk you out of the half sandwich and if you ever see the chalkboard touting the Loaded Baked Potato Soup - do yourself a favor and ask for a tubful. |

King's Hardware "The King of Meat" December 12, 2006 - King's is not the place to bring your vegetarian friends. The menu consist of twenty or so varieties of burger and although the small print offers a veggie burger substitution, the sincerity of the offer may be belied by the numerous stuffed animal heads that stare at you from the walls. The eyes follow you but rather than guilt trip you out of omnivore-dom, Bambi's mom seems to say "are you going to finish that?" The burgers are just that good. If you are wearing elastic waist pants order the oh-no-you-didn't onion rings. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Molly Maguire's "Delicious Smoking Ban" December 12, 2006 - The burgers are so tasty here that my hubby and I used to brave winter winds to walk to this cozy, little Irish dive without forever grinding the stench of a milliion cigarettes into our winter woolies. Now that this place is smokefree there's no reason not to stop buy for a burger and throw some vinegar on your o'yummy fries. |

Cupcake Royale (and Cafe Verite) "Cupcakes - all about the icing" December 12, 2006 - The icing to cake ratio is what the cupcake is all about. A cupcake is not for a cake lover. A cake lover has a piece of cake - iced with an appropriate amount of icing, shared with the whole 8-12" round of cake. The cupcake is a tiny dollop of cake surrounded by a mass of delicious frosting, making the frosting of first rate importance in the delivery of a delicious cuppa cake. Cupcake Royale's cupcakes are not "the best" but they are the best around. Glutton that I am, I prefer an even butterier buttercream for my cupcake (see the Magnolia Bakery Recipe in the cookbook "More from Magnolia"). That said, who can resist a little pink cupcake - although my waistline wishes that the actually tiny mini cupcakes were more readily available these days... 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Senor Moose "Senor Moose" December 12, 2006 - Breakfast at the Moose delights my husband who drools (not unlike a moose) at the sight of an egg within a cool mile of a tortilla. Usually he resigns himself to a humdrum huevos rancheros, but here they have a full page of spicy, beany huevos. I, on the other hand, don't have a thing for South of the Border breakfasts, per se, but have found their bottomless coffee the best drip in town and their egg sandwich yummalito. Not to mention the potato melange - a heap of potatoes covered o'er with cheese, sour cream and goodness. |

Veselka "perogies = the food of the gods" January 05, 2007 - When I nearly sliced off my whole ring finger in 1997 the first thing I did (after the stitches that is) was send my friend to get me a to-go order of Veselka perogies and a side of kielbasa. Although the place has seen some renovations, even over the time I've been visiting, the comforty comfort foods have stayed deliciously, wonderously the same. |

Magnolia Bakery "slap some butter on that cupcake" January 05, 2007 - You who actually still reside in NY don't need to be told how lucky you are. As a former New Yorker (now in Seattle) I rave like a crazy person to any fleece wearing person who will hear that these are the best cupcakes anywhere. I used the recipe from their cookbook for the cupcakes for my wedding. You can make 'em at home, but you just can't bring yourself to put as much icing on one cupcake as they do! |

Xunta "Celebrate, good times, come on!" January 05, 2007 - It's hard to explain the allure of Xunta, but I love this place. Like the Indian joints on Curry Row, it's not "nice" but oh so festive. There's a certain cheese factor in the decor that I find strangely soothing - the seaworthy nets and the giant barrels as tables. It's dark and cavernous and it feels like you could stay there all night sipping plastic pitchers of delicious sangria, ordering more and more dates wrapped with bacon, and then more dates wrapped with bacon and then eating a couple of dates wrapped in bacon until everyone is drunk and laughing. |

Lupa "Testa" January 05, 2007 - The first time I went to Lupa, we ordered the Affetati Piccolo, an assortment of house-cured meats. There was one plate, the Testa, a sort of meaty paste on a plate. My companion asked our jovial waiter what was in it - he replied "I'll tell you when she's had some," pointing to me. I had some and (it was good) and was quickly told (with some relish) that they made it by taking a whole pig's head, boiling it on the stove for a day, scooping out the inside and adding some nutmeg. That's Lupa in a nutshell - a place that can even make THAT taste amazing.Their ricotta gnocchi are light and yummy, their carbonara exquisitely nutty and the sunchoke appetizer is a fresh tasting surprise. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |
