Quinn's
"Open for Lunch!"
March 18, 2008 - Quinn's just opened for lunch, so we have a deadly triangle of Quinn's, Presse, and Boom Noodle for our yummy $15 lunch needs.
I've only been there twice, and have had excellent food both times, but the single reason that I like Quinn's is that they have roasted cauliflower.  Which is only the best vegetable in the entire world that until now I've only had at home and never at a restaurant.

Palace Kitchen
"Rooster!"
February 26, 2008 - I had already eaten dinner so I was looking for something small.  The cured tongue was great, and the large ceramic rooster looking over my shoulder added just the right surreal touch.

Julia's Indonesian Kitchen
"lucky find"
October 05, 2007 - I was planning to go to Alebrije, but it was closed, so I went across the street to Julia's,  It's in an old house, which is always a plus, and so is a cuisine that's new to me.  I sampled the mini rijstaefel (sp?), which is basically a scoop of rice with 3 smallish portions of various dishes.  It's only $8 and more than enough food for me.  Rijsaefels are also available in larger individual sizes and a family size for 4 people.  That sounds like it'll be fun to try...

Ballet
"it's ok"
June 11, 2007 - It's close and cheap, and they have brown rice, but the food is just ok.

Tandoori Kitchen
"Haleem"
January 09, 2007 - I had Haleem for the first time there.  My Indian friend who brought us there insisted that we must try it, and he was right.  It's all kinds of good stuff like meat, grains, lentils and subtle spices, all slow cooked and stirred together until it's gooey and mushy.

Harvest Vine
"eggs with eyes"
November 23, 2006 - I've only been there once, but I'd like to go back.  It was all very good, but one of the more memorable dishes was scrambled eggs with teeny tiny whole fish.
And yes, Chef Joseba Jimenez de Jimenez actually does walk around the restaurant with a pointy mustache and beret.

Chiang's Gourmet
"Taiwanese breakfast!"
November 23, 2006 - I've been to the Renton location for Taiwanese breakfast... sweet or salty soy milk, yui tiau (literally "oil strip", kind of like a deep fried baguette), sesame biscuit things, tea eggs, etc.  The breakfast menu might be only in Chinese.  From when I was in Taiwan I learned that I know enough Chinese to order food but not very precisely.

La Carta de Oaxaca
"so good"
November 16, 2006 - Went there for a party of 10 people once and ordered one of each item on the menu.
When I actually have to decide what to get, I usually go for the fish soup, mole, or entomatadas.

Koraku Restaurant
"Should be "I liked it""
October 26, 2006 - Koraku had the best grilled mackerel, but it's closed now.

Seven Stars Pepper Szechuan Restaurant
"Hot Pot"
October 26, 2006 - One thing to try is hot pot -- if you haven't had it before, they give you a huge bowl of boiling hot broth (divided into hot and not-hot), sitting on a portable burner, and lots of raw ingredients -- noodles, tofu, cabbage, meat, seafood -- and some peanut sauce, and you create your own soup/fondue/whatever meal.

Alicia's Market
"Poke Poke"
June 03, 2008 - On a tip from a frequent visitor to Honolulu who we ran in to at Diamond Head farmer's market (also full of excellent food), we drove over to the other side of town in search of poke.
And poke we found in abundance -- a glass case stretching the entire back wall containing tako (octopus) and the more common ahi in several preparations, lomi salmon, shrimp, piles of snail-like shellfish, etc.  We stared for a good 15 minutes before deciding on three one-pound containers to take back.  The convenience store ambiance was not the best (no seating here, this is a takeout place).  Plenty of other kinds of freshly cooked snack and lunch food too, like roast pork, spam musubi, teriyaki, rice, poi...
As we left I'm sure we were obviously visitors from a colder place -- in addition to our poke we were weighed down with a large bottle of cold water, a coke, and shave ice.

Ningtu
"Great Chinese Brunch"
March 04, 2008 - I went there for brunch with my Dad and my Vancouver relatives.  We had some soy milk (they have both salty and sweet), some sao bing yu tiao (two kinds of fried bread-link things), smoked fish and duck cold dishes, and xiao long bao (soup dumplings).
