Ray's Boathouse
"Oh the cucumber hollandaise!"
March 19, 2007 - Ray's happens to serve possibly my favorite salmon preparation in Seattle: coho with cucumber hollandaise sauce over mashed potatoes and asparagus.  The key here is the cucumber hollandaise sauce, both creamy and cool, which marries perfectly with the three components of the dish.  Especially the salmon.  Sure, coho is no Copper River, but the sauce brings out the rich buttery undertones while neutralizing the less subtle flavors.  And on top of the salty mashed potatoes and summery asparagus, everything works together perfectly.  I could eat this dish over and over--and I have!  Order while sitting out on the deck on a sunny June day for best results.

Mission Pie
"The best pies"
January 25, 2008 - I thought for sure I would overanticipate this pie shop using local organic ingredients grown by underprivileged teenagers (seriously), but I was not disappointed a bit.  First I tried the apple pie.  It was just the way I like it, more apple than pie, with huge chunks of apple (instead of the gelatinous mass you get at most places).  Neither cinnamon nor sugar overpowered the apple taste.  The banana cream similarly let its star ingredient sing in a filling that is silky smooth and light.  The pumpkin was firm and custardy (not liquidy and stringy like many homemade pies) with an intense kick of clove.  The crust is uniformly thin and well-made, although tasting a bit salty when eaten in large chunks.
Overall Mission Pie's creations taste supremely homemade, and like they come from the kind of home where you want to spend all your time.

Local Kitchen & Wine Merchant
"An instant local favorite"
January 17, 2008 - SOMA finally has a truly local spot in 1st Street @ Folsom’s Local Kitchen. Open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and takeout, Local emphasizes local food and a community atmosphere.  During the week lunch is quiet, but dinner and brunch buzz with excitement.  Spotlighting a fusion of Mediterranean and American classics, the menu is filled with creative entrees, pizza, rotisserie, and more.  Dessert is weak (stay away from the tiramisu), but brunch is particularly strong with original takes on American, French, and Swedish classics.  Brunch even features more of their gourmet wood-fired pizzas.  The atmosphere is a blend of modern architecture with homey touches—try sitting at the kitchen counter for a particularly intimate take on the restaurant.  All in all, Local Kitchen is a local success.

Bay Bridge Coffee
"Awesome crepes!"
December 13, 2007 - Bay Bridge Coffee is tiny but they have amazing, freshly (and correctly) made crepes.  The staff is super sweet too.
