McMenamins (Queen Anne) "Friendly and consistent" April 12, 2008 - I hesitate to eat at, let alone recommend, any chain restaurants, but McMenamins is an exception. I like all of the local McMenamins (and would love to try out their hotels some day). The service at the Queen Anne McMenamins is always friendly. The beer is good. The food is a known quantity: homey, tasty, reasonably priced. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Crow "Good but pricey" March 20, 2008 - Crow is a good, solid place to go if you're looking for pre-show or pre-game food in lower Queen Anne. The service is friendly, and the food is pretty good. Prices can be all over the map, though. One of the day's entree specials when we went was scallops. My husband ordered it, and it turned out to be four scallops for $25! He enjoyed them, and said it was enough food, but the price was too high. On the other hand, I ordered the "smashed potato cake" side for $3, which was substantial, delicious, and a real bargain. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Teahouse Kuan Yin "Good shopping for a tea lover" March 05, 2008 - Teahouse Kuan Yin has a decent selection of teas (although I've seen better). What I really appreciate is their selection of tea paraphernalia: teapots, cups, tins, mugs, strainers, etc. It is the ONLY place in the city where I've found cool-looking tea cozies that are not covered in gramma floweryness. |

Smash Wine Bar & Bistro "Great touch with fried foods" February 25, 2008 - Smash has what you might expect from a wine bar: big cheese and wine selection, knowledgeable sommelier, classy atmosphere. To my surprise, though, the things we liked best were the fried items we ordered. Specifically, the duck spring rolls and ginger calamari were extremely good. We went for their happy hour menu expecting to have a light and cheap meal. Instead, we indulged in tasty (but not too heavy) fried stuff and paid more than we were planning to because we had to order several items (and then there was all the wine). 8 people like this review - Recommend |

Verve Wine Bar & Cellar "Go for the wine, not the food" November 10, 2007 - Verve is all about the wine, and rightfully so. They have many interesting choices and we had fun trying flights of different wines. It seems like they serve food just to give you something to do in between sips. The food is okay but not great and a little overpriced. We thought the servers, while attractive, hip, and friendly, seemed inexperienced - there were several times where something was overlooked. I'd recommend eating elsewhere and coming to Verve for wine, cheese, and bread, or wine and dessert. 2 people like this review - Recommend |

Panos Kleftiko Greek Taverna "Good food!" November 10, 2007 - Panos is a great standby in the theatre district of Lower Queen Anne. It's not as small as it used to be: they've opened a back room. Dishes I especially recommend are the tzatziki and the (I think it's called) Kleftiko - lamb, feta, and onions baked inside a sourdough round. Yum. Warning to diners: try to avoid sitting near the door. It is drafty and cold everytime someone goes in or out. 2 people like this review - Recommend |

Six Arms "Meet your friends at the Six Arms" October 05, 2007 - The Six Arms is a great place to meet a group of friends. Most of its tables feature wraparound booths, so you can always squeeze one more in. More intimate tables are upstairs if you prefer. The menu is more interesting than the standard-issue McMenamins menu, and its crown jewel is the "Communication Breakdown Burger" - so good that you'll forget to converse. The kids' menu is available to all, so you can have PB&J if you're in the mood. Finally, the best drink is not on the menu, but you can ask for the "Cilantini". It's a martini made with cilantro, and it is delicious. You'll have at least two. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Osteria la Spiga "Good if you're in the neighborhood" October 04, 2007 - Osteria La Spiga is pretty good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. I was rubbed the wrong way off the bat when our reservation for "four plus a high chair" was put at a four-top table, meaning my kid had to be stuck on a corner of the table (a recipe for spills and a cramped table). I got a snooty attitude when I asked about it, and no bigger table was offered (unless we wanted to sit at the communal table, no thanks). Things improved when the food arrived, though. The cheese plate was absolutely perfect for me, but fans of blue/stronger cheeses might find it lacking. The flatbread was delicious. Everyone's pasta was good, with special mentions for the spinach tortelli and gnocchi (which had a softer, "spreadable" texture). |

Qube Restaurant "Hit or Miss" September 06, 2007 - Something about the name Qube rubs me the wrong way (it sounds like an unimaginative chain restaurant), but my husband dragged me inside anyway. We ordered from the "qubed" prix fixe menu, where each course consists of three small servings featuring a single ingredient. You can choose between (or mix-and-match from) three menus: vegetarian, seafood, or beef. The food was mostly good with a few real misses. For example, the foie gras course came with three very rich (and quite different) servings, but only two tiny pieces of bread. We had to ask for an order of their naan-style bread in order to finish the foie gras. The lowest note of the evening for me was the wine pairing. The sommelier seemed to be trying to duplicate the featured ingredient with the wine. I had dishes featuring tomatoes, dover sole, and strawberries, and each time the wine (though good on its own) was either repetitive or competitive with the flavor of the dish (when I would have preferred a complimentary flavor). On the other hand, the cocktail pairings that my husband chose were imaginative and excellent. Overall, I enjoyed the variety and experimentation (despite the misses), but would recommend choosing your own wine. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Café Presse "Yum!" August 21, 2007 - I finally got a chance to have breakfast at Cafe Presse, and was thoroughly impressed. Their baguettes and brioches are flavorful and fresh. My Croque Madame (croque monsieur with an egg on top) was pitch-perfect. It could have been a greasebomb, but wasn't. We cleaned our plates of every crumb. It's so reasonably priced that I'll be going out of my way to eat there again. One down note: they have no highchairs. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Cafe Piccolo "Manges to be romantic AND kid-friendly" July 29, 2007 - The decor, lighting, music, etc., give Cafe Piccolo a cozy romantic feel. I'd certainly come here on a date. This time, though, I came with the whole family (my husband and 1-yr-old daughter). I was very impressed with our treatment. First, the waitstaff seemed happy to see us and the kid (instead of wary or haughty). There was a colorable kids' menu, with provided crayons. They even have special kids' cups with a straw! And, there is enough space between tables for our kid to not bother the people next to us. After all this, the food only had to be decent to make us happy... but it was also surprisingly good. I had the goat ragout special, which had strong, interesting flavors. The (house-made) pasta was al dente and hearty. The bread was good. I can't wait to go back. 3 people like this review - Recommend |

Pegasus Pizza and Pasta "Awful pasta, awful garlic bread" July 13, 2007 - The thick-crust pizza may be good (my husband thought so), but the pasta was terrible. The tomato sauce was obviously from a can and had no body whatsoever. Even a generous application of salt and parmesan cheese couldn't help. My "garlic bread" was a piece of cheap baguette with only the tiniest hint of butter, covered with garlic powder. It was very dry, and pretty much inedible. The only thing I finished was my caesar salad, which was good, but was probably also from a can. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Original Pancake House "Mind-boggling variety of pancakes" July 10, 2007 - There must be 15 or more different kinds of pancakes on the menu here, including Bacon Pancakes. I ordered the blueberry pancakes, which were delicious. Note: if you order an egg, I recommend getting it scrambled with a bit of cheese. Mmmmm. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Divine "I want it to be better..." July 06, 2007 - Divine is near my house, so I want it to be fantastic. But both times I've been there, I've left wanting more. The food is pretty well-executed, but also quite expensive. For what I paid, I want more sparkle. It's just not that exciting. On the plus side, there were a lot of good-sounding dishes on the menu, so it may just be a matter of trying a few more things. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Rosita's Mexican Grill "Don't miss the tortillas..." June 22, 2007 - If you go here, don't miss the free fresh handmade tortillas. There's a station near the front of the restaurant where a person makes them for the taking (maybe only on weekends, not sure). Rosita's is also very family-friendly: the staff is welcoming and the overall noise level is such that nobody will hear your kids. |

Ten Ren Tea Co. "Good source for tea" June 22, 2007 - If you're a tea lover (as I am), this is a good source for Chinese and Taiwanese tea. Ten Ren is a company with stores worldwide - I have bought tea from them in Seattle and Beijing. I recommend one of the Tung Ting oolongs. |
|
Panama Hotel Tea & Coffee House "Nice little oasis" June 22, 2007 - I used to work in the International District, and often escaped to the Panama Hotel to get tea with a friend. It's not as crowded as the Starbucks and Tullys in the area, so it felt more private and intimate. They have a decent selection of teas, and you can get your own pot. It's in an historic building, too, so be sure to look around. |

Red Mill Burgers (Interbay) "Hits the spot!" June 22, 2007 - One of Seattle's best burger joints. I eat one here every week. The burgers are so filling that I can't fit a milkshake in with it, which is a shame because the milkshakes are good. Extra bonus if you like the Rolling Stones: they are almost always playing Stones music in the restaurant, and the dress code seems to be either a Red Mill shirt or a Rolling Stones shirt. 2 people like this review - Recommend |

Palermo "Good food, slow service" June 22, 2007 - We chose Palermo after walking around on 15th and finding a couple other places too crowded or too fancy (we were in our soccer clothes). It was a good choice - all of us found our food better than we had expected. The marinara sauce is extra tomato-y. The sausage is fennel-y (in a good way). The beef ravioli was also good. On the down side, the service was very slow, even though the restaurant wasn't even half full. |
|
Kona Kitchen "Where did all that food go?" June 16, 2007 - We must have spent a good 10 minutes reading the menu and trying to decide what to order (from the many tasty-sounding options). They have breakfast available all day, as well as lunch and dinner (and a bar). The portions are big, and the food is gooooood. Mine was huge but somehow it disappeared in no time. It's a pretty roomy restaurant, so it'd be a good brunch choice if you wanted to avoid the crowds. |
|
My Coffee House "Parent heaven!" June 13, 2007 - Most of the seating in My Coffee House is in an enclosed children's play area with toys galore. It's big enough to keep kids happy for a long time, but small enough that you and your friends can sit in one place and chat without having to chase after the kids. They have some special brand of New York bagel (H&H) that they get shipped over, plus the usual coffee and tea beverages. You can buy a selection of kid snacks, too, like Cheerios or goldfish. Service was glacially slow the day I went, but the one guy there said the other person scheduled to work didn't show up, so I cut them some slack. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Vios Cafe & Marketplace "Not the overall package I had expected" June 13, 2007 - GOOD: The food was tasty and well prepared. The kids' play area is a nice feature. BAD: Slow service. Noisy. All the tables are communal (shared), a style that makes me feel uncomfortable. Prices are on the high side (even for the kids' menu). Overall, the food is good but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. |

Shanty Cafe "Not what you'd expect to find downtown" June 08, 2007 - The Shanty Cafe is a typical greasy spoon, of the type I'd expect to find in Gold Bar or one of those towns on the way to Stevens Pass. It's got hokey/country decor, a counter for the regulars, and the usual burgers, sandwiches, and breakfast fare. The weird part is that it's in downtown Seattle. Walking in feels sort of like teleporting (in a good way, because I like the food when I'm in the mood for that kind). 2 people like this review - Recommend |

Crave "Crowded but tasty" June 08, 2007 - Crave can get packed because they're in such a tiny space, so you may want to try to go at an off-peak time. We like to sit at the bar so we can have an up-close and personal view of the food being prepared - it's very entertaining. They tend to have good cheese plates, and we've enjoyed pretty much everything we've had there. The waitstaff are surprisingly good-natured for having to work in such a tight space. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Beth's Cafe "A Seattle Institution" June 08, 2007 - When you're hungry for some greasy food at 3am, there's nowhere better to go than Beth's. They have unlimited hashbrowns, tasty milkshakes, and good grilled cheese. They'll give you paper and crayons to express your artistic skills, love, cynicism, and/or offbeat nature, and the walls are completely covered with everyone's creations. The one drawback used to be the smoke, but now that it's outlawed, Beth's is a perfect grungy gem. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Souped Up "I want to hang out here all day, eating mac-n-cheese" June 07, 2007 - Wow! The decor and ambience at Souped Up is really good. Colorful, yet subdued. Stylish, yet comfortable. Roomy, yet intimate. It makes me want to hang out a long time. (They've got wi-fi, too.) The food is good; we enjoyed our soup and sandwiches and felt the quality was good enough to warrant the slightly high prices. The best part, though, is that you can substitute macaroni and cheese for your side salad (for free)! And the bowl that I got was not side-sized but could have been the whole meal. I meant to save most of it to take home but couldn't resist eating about 3/4 because it was SO DAMN GOOD. 2 people like this review - Recommend |

Smarty Pants "Sandwich Heaven!" June 01, 2007 - There are so many tasty-sounding sandwiches on the menu I don't think I'll get to try them all. Everything I've had here is good, and the service snarky (in a good way). If your only impression of Smarty Pants is from the terrible food they serve at the Rat City Rollergirls events, just forget that and pretend this is a different restaurant (because it seems that way). |

Sushi Tokyo "Interesting new menu" May 31, 2007 - I've been to Sushi Tokyo several times over the years, and though it doesn't blow me away, it's good sushi. However, we went last night and found they have a new shiny menu with a ton of different, creative rolls. It'll take a couple visits to try everything we wanted to. Note: They've added two signs to their windows saying "Vegetarian Sushi" which is a bit misleading. They serve lots of regular sushi as well... they just have a vegetarian section of the menu. |

LC's Kitchen "Good for brunch" May 23, 2007 - We often go to LC's Kitchen for brunch. Even on Sunday it's not too crowded and the food is good. |
|
The Jones Bistro "Something for everyone" May 22, 2007 - The Jones is sort of two places in one. On one hand, it's a good place to take a kid or two, because it's loud enough and they have highchairs and casual food like pizza. However, they also have some pricey entrees that seem fancier, and you could go there for a nice dinner and drinks. The food was decent. Also, they have some patio tables if you're looking for sunny dining. |

Taste Café
"Get the grilled cheese!" May 13, 2007 - They have a "Grown-Up Grilled Cheese" that uses Beecher's flagship cheddar and pears, and it's excellent. Lots of good food and drink to take out and eat in the sculpture park. Alcoholic beverages are also sold, but must be eaten in the cafe. |
|
Roti "Good, solid Indian food" May 10, 2007 - When I feel like Indian food in Queen Anne, I always choose Roti over the other nearby options. It's good food and I like the atmosphere (they took a box-shaped room and really made it look nice). The service can sometimes be slow, so leave enough time. |
|
Sabai Sabai "Closed!" May 09, 2007 - We went to eat here recently (on May 7, 2007) and it was closed. It is apparently moving, but no new address was posted. |
|
Thai Ocean "Not as bad as it looks from outside" May 07, 2007 - Thai Ocean has a really un-welcoming exterior, set back from the sidewalk and tangled with ramps and railings. Once you get inside, the decor is like pretty much every Thai restaurant in town. The food is not too bad... I enjoyed and finished all of my phad thai. My husband's food was good enough, but unremarkable. Interesting note: The women's restroom must contain over a thousand dried roses, hung bouquet by bouquet on top of each other. According to my husband, all the men's restroom contains is a "copy of a copy of an Ansel Adams print." 2 people like this review - Recommend |
|
Than Brothers Restaurant (Green Lake) "Mmmm... creampuffs." May 07, 2007 - The pho at Than Bros is definitely good, but the real reason to choose this small local chain is the free creampuff you get with every order. Don't bother with the chicken pho - beef is much better. |
|
Marcello "Good food, weird feel" April 25, 2007 - My husband hates going here because there's something weird about the ambience. It feels like it's lost in time, from a previous era or something (but not in a hip retro way). If you can get past that, I've always enjoyed the food a lot. |
|
Mr Villa Mexican Restaurant "Tasty & family friendly" April 25, 2007 - I had a really good torta (sandwich) there, and it was a great place to bring our baby (noisy and welcoming, with a ceiling fan to boot). 3 people like this review - Recommend |
|
Cooper's Alehouse "Astounding beverage selection!" April 25, 2007 - Coopers has an astounding range of beers and ciders on tap. I think they have about 21 taps, and the list is always changing. The food is good bar food (they make a killer grilled cheese), and there's a lot to do there (TVs, board games, pool, and darts). |
|
Pies & Pints "One of my favorite local places" April 25, 2007 - Apparently the folks at Pies & Pints worked for TWO YEARS to perfect their crust recipe. The pies are good, but I tend to go lighter with the spinach salad and pretzels (the beer cheese sauce is yummy). Important note: they only use fresh-squeezed juice in their cocktails, so this is the best screwdriver in town. 1 person likes this review - Recommend |

Wallingford Pizza House "Where the twain shall meet" April 25, 2007 - It's nice to find a place where they will serve both Chicago-style deep dish pizza and New York-style thin crust pizza, so fans of both styles can eat together. The pizza sauce is killer. However, as the NY-style fan in the family, I must say that the thin crust is only thin compared to the deep-dish pizza. It is much thicker than I prefer, but I thought it was tasty anyway. 2 people like this review - Recommend |

Vij's "Is any food worth a 2.5 hour wait?" March 03, 2008 - We arrived at 6:15 on a Saturday and didn't get a table until after 8:30. We spent the first hour of our wait in a nearby bar, and the rest wedged into Vij's noisy bar like sardines. By the time we sat down, we were grouchy and not properly hungry (due to the drinks and little fried snacks they occasionally passed around the bar). The food was fine, especially the lamb popsicles, but we wouldn't go back. We'll just use Vij's great cookbook and make the food at home! 3 people like this review - Recommend |

Bin 942 "Okay, but trying too hard" November 10, 2007 - Bin 942 is desperately trying to be a hip dinner joint and it shows. The menu is full of cutesie terms (such as "Damage" for "Price" and "Hip Hops" for "Beer") and I just can't keep myself from mentioning the unsophisticated mish-mash of fonts. It is a small, crowded, and noisy restaurant, with no good place for people to wait for a table. Also, the tables are simply too small to accomodate the many plates of tapas-style eating. The food was good and the service friendly, but it was not as remarkable as we had hoped. |
